Historical Information
Weston is unique with 2,000 acres of interconnected, man-made waterways and a 1,185-acre wetland mitigation area, the largest in the United States.
In the 1950s, Arthur Vinning Davis (founder of Alcoa) first acquired 10,000 acres and created the Arvida Development. Then in 1984, the first homes were completed and Weston had it's first residents in Windmill Ranch Estates and Country Isles.
More than 90 percent of the residents live in communities governed by city-like homeowner associations created by the developer, Arvida/JMB Partners. Another 8.5 percent live in homeowner associations created by other developers or condominium associations. Only 350 houses aren't in a development controlled by an association.
The associations have the power to control the appearance of every house in their individual communities in addition to their common areas, assuring that property values will be maintained. In addition, city officials have not only been caretakers of the abundant landscaping along the public streets but continue to add more landscaping every year, adding to the city's unique appearance.
Weston will continue to have a neat, manicured, lush look for years to come. With all the utilities buried under ground, there is rarely an outage, even after Huricane Wilma, which went right over the town from the Everglades.
Weston is an ethnically diverse community. The common thread that crosses all lines is affluence. The City of Weston was ranked 20th in CNN Money.com's ranking of Cities with the highest Median Incomes within the United States. BusinessWeek.com named Weston one of the 25 most affordable suburbs in the United States. Weston also has the highest median income in Florida - $83,000. Ranked by wealth indicators by ESRI, Weston has 3 of the wealthiest top zip codes in Florida.
